Hello

The storm season is nearly upon us and residents who have lived here all their lives, as I have, will be well aware that cyclones do hit our region. Lives have been lost in the past. We want to ensure that doesn’t happen in the future.

The key to your family’s survival during a cyclone, flood or bushfire is preparation.

The Council is helping you prepare by issuing every household with an Emergency Action Guide containing preparation tips, then holding public meetings to answer your questions.

Read your Emergency Action Guide then bring it along to one of the meetings listed on the Council’s website. When you get home after the meeting, put what you have learned into practice.

My husband John and I will be attending a meeting for our family’s welfare. It is so long since a cyclone came our way that we might well have forgotten some of the measures we should be taking and there are sure to be new, helpful ideas.

Gather your neighbours and family together and come along in a group. It could be a social occasion that could save your lives.

Kind regards,

Julie Arthur
Acting Fraser Coast Mayor

You should have received in your letterbox a Council Emergency Action Guide that includes tips on preparing for storms, flood, bushfire or cyclones.

Read your guide thoroughly to ensure you fully understand how to prepare for an emergency then, most importantly, prepare!

Bring your Emergency Action guide along to one of the remaining free public seminars on how to prepare. Left: Seminar organiser Chris Vakas shows Acting Mayor Julie Arthur what an emergency pack could contain.

HAVE YOUR SAY ON THE HERVEY BAY FORESHORE DEVELOPMENT OR CLEANUP

RSVP BY FRIDAY, 12 NOVEMBER-FRASER COAST CHRONICLE

As you are aware, the Fraser Coast Chronicle has asked the question about whether or not the Foreshore area of Hervey Bay should be left as it is or have work undertaken to provide better usage for the broader community. The Esplanade represents one of the key assets for the Fraser Coast and the question about what to do with the foreshore is a question that has been sitting unanswered for too long. What do we, as a community, want from our Esplanade and our foreshore for the next twenty years?

Peter Chapman has offered to conduct a survey of the wider community to gain an understanding of their views and the Chamber believes it is important that as many people as possible participate so that the outcome is truly representative of the wider community and not the vocal minorities. This is a rare chance for you to have a say and let your voice be heard.

To participate in the survey email hbedit@frasercoastchronicle.com.au and tell the Chronicle what you think should be done. You must attach your name and suburb for the vote to be recognized.

For the record, I believe the Foreshore needs to be cleaned up and have emailed the Chronicle saying so. What do you think?

Hello HenryThe Council’s decision to enlist Brisbane company Guymer Bailey architects to design the Maryborough Aquatic Centre redevelopment was based on sound criteria developed to ensure best value for Fraser Coast ratepayers.

The criteria are standard for all tenders and are adhered to strictly to ensure fairness and to comply with the Local Government Act. Price is weighted at 20% of the overall evaluation criteria. The other criteria are Relevant Experience 30%, Vision and Innovation 25% and Methodology 25%.

This contract is for the design phase only of the project and represents about 7% of the $6.5 million project budget. Tenders for the construction work on the pool complex will be called next year and local companies will be encouraged to tender to undertake the project.

While the Council in its Five Point Plan, committed to using Fraser Coast suppliers and contractors where possible, this is one of the very few occasions where the majority of Councillors believed the winning tenderer had the best expertise for the project at an acceptable price and was offering best value for the community.

Council continues to support local businesses with more than $12m injected recently into the local economy through 10 major projects, not including civil, road and bridge building projects.

Economic Development continues to remain a major focus for the Fraser Coast Regional Council.
Following changes to its organisational structure last year, the Council appointed Kim Roberts as the Executive Manager Strategic Integration to help boost the focus on economic development.
Mr Roberts has built a five-member team comprised of the Major Projects Team, Sustainability Project Officer, Manager of Economic Development and an Administration Support Officer to spearhead economic development.
In addition the entire Executive Management Team will be involved in the major economic development activities of Council.
Our former Manager of Economic Development Andrew Jackson has recently left to take up a position with the North Burnett Regional Council. He will be missed but the vacant position will be filled.
These changes will help ensure that the Council can respond quickly to new opportunities and has the necessary experienced staff to progress projects as they arise.
We are serious about economic development and are determined to provide an environment for sustainable business opportunities.

Population growth on the Fraser Coast is outstripping the state’s average by close to one percent, cementing the region’s reputation as one of Queensland’s most desirable locations to live, work and play.
Fraser Coast Mayor Mick Kruger said he was pleased to see that the region was still at the forefront in terms of growth.
“That equates to jobs, business growth and opportunities for the region and that is definitely good news in these difficult economic times.”
Treasurer and Regional Planning Minister for the Wide Bay Burnett Andrew Fraser announced the figures saying a report – Population growth highlights and trends Queensland 2010 – showed the Fraser Coast was Queensland’s second-fastest growing local government area in 2008-09 outside south-east Queensland with a growth rate of 3.6 per cent.
“The Fraser Coast continues to perform well in the population stakes, attracting 3,500 people in the year to June 2009,” Mr Fraser said. “While growth over 2008-09 was a little more subdued than the 3.8 per cent average annual growth seen in the five years between 2001-2006, what’s clear is that the Fraser Coast is one of the most attractive regions in our state.”
Population growth highlights and trends Queensland 2010 is now available on the Office of Economic and Statistical Research website www.oesr.qld.gov.au

Fraser Coast Mayor Mick Kruger said the briefings had proved very popular, especially in the smaller communities but they have now been rebranded as less formal Community Chats.
He said he considered the chats a great opportunity for residents to share their thoughts with Councillors and senior Council staff.
The first of the new format Community Chats will be held at 10am in the Broweena Historical Society Museum on September 28.
A full list of venues and times and the questions and answers from the July 2010 community briefing at Maryborough City Hall on 27 July 2010 are available on the Council’s website www.frasercoast.qld.gov.au

The survey asked what characteristics of the Fraser Coast people liked, what needed improving, challenges for the region and other questions that would help the Council determine a way forward for the region.
Data will be collected on Council’s electricity consumption, fuel use and waste management to determine greenhouse gas emissions.
