The Burrum Chamber of Commerce executive and the community at large met with council @ the Howard community hall on the 26th May 2009 to openly discuss matters of interest and need in the Burrum District.

Council had heard the input from members of the gallery and made notes on same for activation within their mandate of responsibility to its electorate

dscf00172

The Chamber supports this marvellous initiative and would like to think that this will be a regular event as has been mooted by our vice president Mal Chard who chaired the meeting’s issues agenda.

The community hopefully wil appreciate this opportunity and attend each of these as they become available so the council can keep in touch with the people who elected them and attend accurately to their needs in a timely manner

WELL DONE BY THE ORGANIZERS OF THIS EVENT

CHAMBER DIRECTIONAL LETTER TO CHAMBER BY OUR PRESIDENT 1998

NOTE THE EARLIER ADVICES BY OUR PRESIDENT ON THE DIRECTION OF THE BURRUM CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

Re:- Meeting 4th Februrary 1998

Dear Sir

During the above mentioned meeting my name was brought forward for nomination to an executive position. My sincere thanks for that proposal, which I had to decline for the following reasons.

1…No opportunity prior to the meeting to study the constitution

2…My fear that the Chamber would develop into a community oriented group, rather than an organization promoting trade and business with the added benefits to the community.

Having now perused the constitution and rules, and listened in at the meeting. My impressions stated in [2] were confirmed.

My opinion is that there sufficient organizations working hard for the community and they should be supported by anyone who feels they can contribute.

The Chamber of Commerce should be first and foremost to promote trade and commerce and support other organizations where their interests are similar.

A broad based Chamber of Commerce as proposed will have to deal with often divisive issues and could well become impotent in its decision making.

[ie. The goal issue-tourist development plans-redirecting roads or traffic-creating new businesses in recycling or extraction industries etc.]

In addition, is it really in the interest of good business management, owner operated or not, to debate in open forum matters relating to wages, conditions, future directions etc?

Respectfully, I suggest the Executive look at the following articles and suggested changes/amendments..>

Art…5.

Delete all after “commerce and industry” and insert “registered as such with consumer affairs or other appropriate institution”.

Art…10.

Insert c.: The Chamber may invite members of community based organizations [Progress, P & C, etc] so nominated by their organization to selected meetings where co-operation and or consultation is desirable. Reciprocal invitations should be sought.

Sir, I thank you for your indulgence and trust that your executive will read this letter in the constructive spirit in which it was written.

As it stands. I regret I cannot become a member of the chamber and, by my discussions with other people I find I am not alone.

Time permitting, it is my intention to attend another meeting in the near future

Yours Faithfully

W.C. Gosewisch

Under all circumstances we must maintain our focus and direction as per the above 1998 outline which is as relevent then as it is now..

We are a commercially oriented group structured to maintain and promote new and current business development in the Burrum area.

Lest we forget..!!
