The winners will be announced on World Environment Day, June 5.
“The awards are open to everyone from people who pick up rubbish on their daily walk to volunteer groups doing major restoration projects,” Mayor Mick Kruger said.
“The council is very aware of the need to protect the environment. It has helped set up a number of groups where volunteers look after areas of the region’s foreshore and parks.
“These awards are a way for council to recognise and reward everyone who makes an effort to look after our environment.”
The categories for the awards include:
Fraser Coast Environmentalist of the Year. The award recognises individuals who have been a positive force for carrying out environmental work, organising projects or setting an example to the community.
Fraser Coast Young Environmentalist of the Year. The award highlights the efforts of young people (17 years of age and under on 1 January 2009) who show leadership in environmental projects.
Environmental School. The award recognises an outstanding school project that encourages and promotes environmental activity and awareness.
